The second half of 19th century chi-ro cross with a cameo of Pope Pio IX, (dead 1878). Micromosaic of roses and one anchor.
Because anchors look somewhat like a cross on a crescent, early Christians used them as a symbol of their Christianity under Roman persecution. Hence, the anchor became a symbol of salvation. Today the anchor remains a symbol of hope, strength, and steadfastness.
The Chi Rho (/ˈkaɪ ˈroʊ/; also known as Chrismon is one of the earliest forms of christogram, formed by superimposing the first two (capital) letters—chi and rho (ΧΡ)—of the Greek word ΧΡΙΣΤΟΣ(Christos) in such a way that the vertical stroke of the rho intersects the center of the chi.
