The murrina known as the “Gallo di Murano” originated as a protest by the island’s glassmakers in response to the loss of their autonomy when it was placed under the authority of the Municipality of Venice (31 December 1923). To express their dissent, some of the most renowned glass artisans on the island—Ulderico Moretti, Giuseppe Barovier, and Francesco Moretti—created murrine featuring the rooster, which is a symbol of Murano, in contrast to the Lion of St. Mark, the emblem of Venice. Ulderico Moretti produced at least seven different cane designs depicting the rooster, and one of the finest examples showcases five turns of millefiori murrine, characteristic of his furnace’s production.
