This ancient murrina is part of a series of portraits depicting notable figures from the Italian Risorgimento, created by Jacopo Franchini. The series includes portraits of Vittorio Emanuele II, King of Italy; General Giuseppe Garibaldi; and Prime Minister Camillo Benso, Count of Cavour. This murrina is referenced in the book “Miniature di vetro – Murrine 1838-1974” by Professor G. Sarpellon, published in Venice in 1990 by Arsenale, on page 83, picture 628.

This particular murrina is particularly large in size.

This murrina has been made using his father technique called open mold.

It consists of composing a complex pattern using thousands thin glass canes of different colors in an apposite iron mold, heating them until the glass softens and stretching it out, taking great care to avoid any deformation;but what distinguish the work of Franchini from all what will be done after him,is that. He will create separately each element of the figure he is working on: nose,eye,medals,etc,and regroup them hereafter in a unique tube.An incredibly difficult job.

This murrina is in perfect condition,and of an exceptional size.
