Bleached Carnelian Bead from China-Tibet
An antique carnelian bead displaying a quite uncommon design.
These beads range from orange to deep red in colour, depending on iron’s inclusions in chalcedony.
According to Horace Beck “Etched Carnelian Beads”, 1933, who divided these beads into three periods, it belongs to the “late period” that goes from the 500BCE to 1000CE.
This pattern is habitually found in white on black, and it is considered as a “Chung dZi” in Tibet.
Normally this kind of beads are etched in white colour.
