Antique Golden Earrings Pampadam, Tamil Nadu, South of India
These antique earrings, known as “PAMPADAM,” are traditional ornaments worn by women in certain districts of Tamil Nadu, South India. Their symbolism is often interpreted as a stylized representation of the mythical Garuda bird, which is known as “the exterminator of snakes.” Garuda is attributed with the power to heal snake bites, with “pampa” meaning snake in Tamil. The gold elements that make up the earrings are hollow and are supported by a special lacquer that preserves their shape. These earrings date back to the beginning of the 20th century or the late 19th century.
